Self builders urged to spend time finding the "right architect"

Anybody looking to build their own home or significantly improve their existing home is advised to find an architect who fits them best.

According to Willson and Bell Architects, homeowners and prospective homeowners should put time aside to find "the right architect" because it is all about "personality".

Speaking at the Grand Designs Live show in Birmingham, the company’s Nick Willson said people looking at adding a simple conservatory will find it cheaper to go to an architectural consultant or technician who will draw some plans up.

"If you want something special and bespoke that, when your neighbours and friends walk in, it will blow their minds away, then go for an architect," he advised.

Mr Willson added that the long-term benefits for those embarking on a self build project totally outweigh the fees.

The National Association of Estate Agents reported last month that more than 90 per cent of its members thought that an extension could add value to a home.ADNFCR-833-ID-18829862-ADNFCR
