Selling a home 'takes longest in London'

Published: 31/07/2007

Selling a home

Householders looking to avoid spending a long time arranging the sale of their home are unlikely to find any such joy in London, with new research showing that it takes almost two months to complete a sale within the capital.

The time taken between agreeing a sale and exchanging contracts averaged 59 days from April to June, conveyancy firm LMS has reported.

This was down from the 65 days it took in the first quarter of the year, LMS noted, but still 13 days above the average reported in the north.

"Any improvement over the inefficient months of earlier this year is worth holding on to, but we are confident that this is because of a dip in the volume of transactions and not an indication of overall efficiency savings," suggested LMS director of marketing and new business Dominic Toller.

The introduction of Home information packs (Hips) tomorrow is intended to make the selling process easy, the government has said.
