Shortage of skilled builders in UK

The construction industry is suffering a shortfall of skills in the UK, according to new research.
Figures from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) reveal that three quarters of UK construction firms have experienced staffing problems in the last year with 72 per cent predicting that there will even more demand for staff this year.
Michael Brown, the chief executive of CIOB, said: "A combination of small numbers leaving university and a buoyant global construction industry have both been factors in the skills shortages we now see."
Some 68 per cent of building firms say the UK workforce is under-skilled and that the industry does not attract a good calibre of worker because it is not attractive enough.
Mr Brown added that giving young people meaningful responsibility in their careers then the construction would be better able to retain and develop them.
Meanwhile levels of migrant workers from Eastern Europe working in the building sector has increased.
