South-west ''best place to live''

The most desirable neighbourhood in the UK is the south-west, according to a new report.

Somerfield supermarket chain has been compiling research which names the south-west as the best place to live in the country because it has low levels of crime, good local services and friendly neighbours.

Inner London trails behind as the least desirable place to live, mainly due to its high crime rates.

Pete Williams, from the supermarket, said: "You only need to look at the average high street to see that community spirit is alive and well in the UK.

"With the small retailer experiencing a revival and local grocers still going strong, people rely more on their local communities."

He added that neighbourhoods have undergone changes such as police patrols replaced by Community Support Officers and that typical neighbourhood pubs have been replaced by trendy wine bars.
