South-west prices holding up

A number of locations in the south-west of England have seen high price inflation in the past year while the region as a whole saw half the decline of the UK average, new figures have shown.

St Austell in Cornwall has emerged as the hottest spot for 2007, with 26 per cent inflation, according to the most recent Halifax figures.

The building of 52 new flats at Sandy Hills in the town and the £75 million redevelopment of the town centre may be major reasons behind this trend, homemove.co.uk reports.

Another Cornish town, Truro, tops the list of the most expensive towns ahead of Bath, reports the Bath Chronicle.

The average price for the whole region is £211,404, above with the national average figure Halifax recorded of £197,071.

Prices in the region fell 0.4 per cent in December, compared with 0.8 per cent nationwide.

Those living in the south-west may consider the self build option as an alternative way of getting on the housing ladder in the light of the scale and durability of higher prices there.
