Southampton 'proving a popular property destination'

Southampton is a hot new property destination which offers a "diverse and fast-moving" market, catering to all types of people who want to settle in the city, according to experts.

Quentin Thatcher, the director of a local estate agents, says that due to the size of Southampton it offers a diverse range of property and locations to suit varying requirements and budgets.

The prices are generally lower than neighbouring towns such as Winchester too so it often attracts those on a smaller budget.

"Southampton, for this part of Hampshire, is probably more within the majority of first-time buyers' reach," said Mr Thatcher.

"Winchester is only twelve, thirteen miles away but Southampton is a lot, lot cheaper. Then again, there are parts of Southampton that are very expensive. Unfortunately, because it's such a large city, the diversity does give you that contrast."

He added that the core markets in Southampton are students, investments for nurses and hospital staff plus ordinary owner-occupiers.
