Spectacular rebirth for many UK cities

Many UK towns and cities are undergoing a "spectacular renaissance" due to regeneration projects, according to prime minister Tony Blair.

Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield and Derby are among the cities which have seen drastic improvements thanks to public/private partnerships bringing investment and new jobs.

Using the example of Cardiff, Mr Blair said that in the 1980s it was in decline with high unemployment before major redevelopment started in the 1990s. Now it is the UK''s first Fair Trade city and has the largest film, TV and multimedia sector outside London.

"Cardiff is now, on any basis, one of the foremost cities of Europe," said Mr Blair.

He added that the New Deal for Communities is supporting ten-year projects in 29 towns across the UK which will create more prosperous cities which are more attractive dwelling places for families.

He said exciting plans are afoot for the redevelopment of Gloucester Quay, the Middlehaven project bin Middlesbrough and Liverpool.
