Straw bale option to be displayed

Those considering the self build of their homes and wanting to do so in the most eco-friendly way can find out more about the qualities of straw bale as a building material next month.

Ecobuild, an event dedicated to eco-friendly design and construction, will include demonstrations of how the material can be used in building when it takes place at Earl's Court between February 26th and 28th, the Green Building Press reports.

A number of demonstrations will be held at the event, including how the material is used along with lime and clay plastering.

Among the attributes of straw bale are its organic origin and insulating qualities.

Last week, the Times reported that self building of eco-homes was growing in popularity.

In addition to the lower cost of building than buying, VAT exemption on materials and avoidance of stamp duty, the practice has also grown because "people want the right location and control over the design, construction and specification," Calum Kerr, head of self-build at Savills Private Finance, told the paper.
