Survey questions improvement in affordability

The notion that housing market affordability is substantially improving due to falling prices has been questioned by the latest figures from the Financial Times House Price Index.
Data for the month of March has indicated that there was no change in prices, contradicting findings such as the recent Halifax survey that said there had been a 2.5 per cent dip.
It was the fourth time in five months that the index had shown little or no change, the paper said.
The survey is also not the only one published recently to suggest that prices are static rather than falling.
Land Registry figures for England and Wales in February revealed last week produced a figure of no overall change, with regional variations balancing out.
Those hoping to get on to the housing ladder for less than the sort of prices that are common now may decide to look to the self build option to accomplish this aim.
