Sustainable wood building techniques taught in Liverpool

One property building company is going green by training its builders in how to use wood products from sustainable sources.

Lovell, which builds affordable housing at itsBirkenhead depot, has launched a training programme which enables staff to increase their knowledge of sustainable wood sources and techniques.

Paul Hulme, the regional director of Lovell, said: "Lovell has a strong track record in green construction, including the use of sustainable building materials and environ-mentally friendly construction techniques.

"Given our requirement to buy timber from legal and sustainable sources The Wood for Good learning programme will help us continue to meet our commitment to responsible timber purchasing."

Wood is a good tool for construction because it has a high strength-to-weight ratio. Pine and spruce are 16 times lighter than steel and five times lighter than concrete.

It also has a good fire performance whereas steel can buckle and collapse.
