Terraces 'most popular purchase'

Terraces

Terraced homes tend to be bought more by first-time buyers than home movers, new research has shown.

A study by Nationwide of Department for Communities and Local Government statistics found that 38 per cent of first-time buyer purchases were of this kind of property, compared with 27 per cent of all purchases.

Such homes tend to be cheaper than others at an average of £149,668, the study found.

The Land Registry figure for the same sort of property is a similar £144, 814, with the latter's statistics not including Scotland, although just 15 per cent of Scottish home sales are terraces - the lowest for any region.

However, the price of terraces has risen by more than ten per cent a year over the past five years, up 51.4 per cent in total.

Those who may have found such increases difficult to afford may decide to opt for the self build method to get on the ladder more cheaply and could get a more spacious house in doing so.
