The low-down on gardens

A large and tidy garden is crucial in attracting buyers to your home, according to experts.

Lucian Cook, from estate agent Savills, says that almost three-quarters of Britons would consider a garden as a significant attraction when buying a property and that 70 per cent of them class a good garden as an important aspect of home ownership.

"It's all part of presentation of the property. People say that first impressions count, so having something that's neat and tidy will have an impact," he said.

"There should be a correlation between garden size and the attributes of the garden and the impact it has on [property] value."

However, for first-time buyers, gardens are perhaps less important and buying a property without a garden is a sacrifice most first-timers are prepared to make in order to get onto the property ladder.

"Access to a degree of outside space is possibly of importance to them, but having something which is well-stocked with mature scrubs and hedges isn't," added Mr Cook.
