There is a storm coming, insurers warn

Homeowners and builders are being warned by esure to protect their properties from the forthcoming storms, it has emerged.

Website Easier has reported that some of the greatest risks from storms come from "falling masonry and dislodged roof tiles" so people need to get out their ladders and tool box.

Dislodged roof tiles should be replaced or repaired, according to the insurer, because in England and Wales only every fourth roof tile is actually securely nailed down.

Easier.com has claimed that last year's Kyrill storm was responsible for 11 fatalities and caused hundreds of millions of pounds worth of damage.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting for esure home insurance, said: "With the weather seemingly breaking new records each year, we would urge every homeowner in the UK to take steps to prevent storm damage right now.

Those that are in the middle of a self build project or renovating a property could take similar measures to ensure that the building site is secure and any suspect brickwork and masonry is looked at and all loose items are tied down.
