Thousands more homes planned for London

London mayor Ken Livingstone has announced the latest phase of his planning strategy for the capital as part of an effort to increase the provision of affordable housing in the city.

The mayor has unveiled proposals for 50,000 new affordable homes to be built by 2011, a move which amounts to a 50 per cent increase in the number of affordable homes available to Londoners.

The plan will also see the number of homes for social rent double, with eco-friendly developments being prioritised.

Mr Livingstone noted that the provision of such property was of paramount importance to the long-term health of the capital.

"We are building on the improvements we have already seen in areas like policing and transport and applying the same approach of planning and investment to tackle the supply of affordable homes," he asserted.

"We will build more affordable homes because that is what London is crying out for, which is why there will be no rowing back from the fifty per cent affordable housing target across London.

"The strategy will address climate change, one of our most urgent priorities, by building new homes and developments to much higher environmental standards," the mayor concluded.

Mr Livingstone is due to stand for re-election next year following the completion of two terms as London mayor.
