Timber may grow in popularity as building material

The growing popularity of using eco-friendly building materials may bring about a boom in the timber industry, it has been reported.

Forestry Commission Wales is to build an eco-house made from the material in a bid to highlight its virtues to builders, the Daily Post reports.

Welsh assembly sustainability minister Jane Davidson had come up with the idea after telling a building conference in Cardiff last year: "There is no more sustainable a building material than wood."

She said attributes included locking away carbon, proving insulation, being light and the capacity for it to be sourced locally.

The popularity of timber has seen the UK market for the material grow by ten per cent, the paper noted.

Earlier this week the cargo ship Ice Prince was shipwrecked off the south coast of England, causing its cargo of thousands of timber planks to be washed up along the Sussex coast.
