''Toast'' house approved for brownfield land

Published: 20/04/2007

Following two years of planning applications, plans to construct a three-metre wide house in the south-east of London have been given the go-ahead.

To be built between two adjacent properties, giving it its nickname of the "toast" house, the new home will feature a master suite as well as an additional two bedrooms over three stories, not more than 2.8 metres in width.

According to the project''s architect Cezary Bednarski, the development aims to take advantage of "the most awkward of brownfield sites".

The inclusion of mirrored panels on the top floor of the house will give the property a "boat-like opulence", Mr Bednarski claimed, while the wooden frames supporting the structure will give the "feel of a houseboat moored in the sky between trees".

Priced at around £60,000, the unique property is expected to attract those looking to get on the housing ladder yet who are currently priced out by the rising prices in the capital.

According to industry observers, with the market continuing to grow, such developments could become increasingly commonplace across the country.
