Brick walls last for many years and offer shade, privacy and shelter from the elements. Aim for a height of around seven foot to shield your self-build from prying eyes.

While wood is generally used for rural or country-style properties, metal railings are better suited to urban homes because they have more formal facades. You can purchase both traditional and contemporary metal work designs plus bespoke designs made to order.

If you are renovating an 18th or 19th century property, you may especially find cast iron railings more appropriate because they enhance the foreboding nature of your home's aesthetic.

Unobtrusive styles are also available such as natural screens made of hazel hurdles, bamboo, woven willows, heather screens or other plants which give a more natural appearance.
