Tradesmen in short supply

Almost one in five households in the UK has struggled to find a skilled tradesperson to do a job in their property over the past two years, new research has revealed.

The study from BGL Group has found that plumbing has been the most in demand trade over the past two years, with more than a third of Britons having hired one during that period.

Sixteen per cent of respondents said that they had hired a builder since 2005, and overall satisfaction was high – just five per cent saying they were very dissatisfied with work done by UK tradespeople.

"Demand for skilled tradesmen remains strong with many of us finding it tough to get the people we need to carry out essential jobs," commented Lisa Corston from Budget Van Insurance.

"Historically we've imported the skills of tradesmen where there have been gaps in the labour market and it seems that this tradition is set to continue," Ms Corston added.
