UK should wise up to ''purpose of planning''

The planning process and its relevant requirements is poorly understood by members of the British public, according to a new report.
Research shows that planning officers are often unpopular with the local community because they are tasked with making difficult and unpopular decisions which only better public understanding can ameliorate, according to the Planning Officers Society.
The report, named Future Planners, says that planning professionals can play a decent role in enabling sustainable development.
Hilary Herbert, from the society, said: "I think there is a lot of education needed.
"What the planning act has done is improve public participation but alongside that there needs to be a lot more social responsibility."
She said that often developments are unpopular but people need to get behind them and act responsibly because they will benefit the community as a whole, rather than just a few taking an instant dislike to a project.
Planners act on behalf of the wider view, added Ms Herbert.
