UK''s housing stock ''changing dramatically ''

A dramatic change in Britain''s housing stock is taking place because local planning authorities are not allowing property developers to build more semi detached or detached homes, according to one expert.

Dave Bexon, the managing director of a housing website called smartnewhomes.com, said that downward pressure on apartment prices means that there is a huge stock of flats available on the property market.

However the upward price trend of semi detached homes is continuing until more stock becomes available.

Mr Bexon said: "Not everybody wants to live in a city centre apartment but, because of planning guidelines about brownfield sites and high density, very few detached houses and semis are being built."

He said that for many British cities there is already the risk of an unbalanced property mix with an oversupply of apartments. He said you could see this particularly in cities like Nottingham and Manchester.
