Urban floods ''seek new solutions''

New approaches to urban flooding are currently in development by the government''s department for environment, food and rural affairs.
Some 15 new projects are being piloted across the UK to help find a solution to the problem of surface water and urban drainage in cities and towns which could worsen due to climate change.
Ian Pearson, minister for climate change and environment, said: "Many homes and businesses have already suffered from the devastating impacts.
"But climate change will make the problem of urban flooding more serious because of the increased likelihood of more intense and frequent rain storms."
Flooding is usually down to high river levels, limited capacity of drainage systems and blockage of waterways.
Areas being particularly targeted are North Brent in London, Upper Rea in Birmingham and West Garforth in Leeds.
The best ways of managing urban drainage will be sought in order to reduce future flooding.
Around two million UK properties are in flood risk areas in England and Wales, affecting around five million people.
