Warning over green building plans

An expert on green building has warned that many new homes may be badly built because of an over-obsession with meeting sustainable homes ratings targets levels five and six.

Director of Inbuilt Consulting Dr David Strong warned the Ecobuild conference in London that: "There is much more to delivering exemplary built environments than zero carbon," the company stated.

He expressed concern that the attainment of the sustainability standards could come at the expense of issues such as acoustics, indoor air quality and flood resistance.

Another warning about eco-building has come from UK National House Building Council chief executive Imtiaz Farookhi.

Mr Farookhi told the BBC there was a danger that the wrong sorts of microrenewables may be fitted to certain new homes, stating: "Not all options that are currently available will be suited for every development."

Those wishing to live in an eco-friendly home which has not neglected important factors could choose to use the self build option to ensure all the relevant issues are addressed.
