Warning over tree dangers to homes

The possibility that a tree may cause damage to a house is something that can only be established by expert investigation, it has been advised.

Margaret Lipscombe, director of urban programmes at the Tree Council, advised that the impact a tree may have would require an inspection from an aboriculturalist, who would inspect the roots and discover if these may cause subsidence issues.

She said: "It is a complex issue, but by consulting an expert you may find that reducing the size of the tree rather than cutting it down is an option."

Such advice may apply not only to those buying a house, but also those seeking to build or extend a house on a plot of land with a tree close to it.

Guidance for dealing with trees includes documents such as the London Tree Officers Association's Risk Limitation Strategy for Tree Root Claims.

This gives details on the body's policy of pruning, cutting and even removing troublesome trees.
