Yorkshire eco-town plan rejected

Those hoping to live in eco-friendly homes in North Yorkshire may have to go down the self build route to fulfil their dream after two plans for an eco town near Selby were given a hostile reception by the district council.

Council members are to urge the government to reject two proposals by developer GMI for such towns, one between Eggborough and Kellington and the other near Darrington, the York Press reports.

Mark Crane, the leader of the district council, insisted the authority was not against eco-towns in principle, but said: "We do not believe that the principles of sustainability, delivering local employment, developing on brown field land and adequate provision of affordable housing can be achieved with either of these developments."

The Darrington site is also close to Pontefract, which lies across the border in West Yorkshire as part of the City of Wakefield.

In a letter to the Pontefract and Castleford Express, Andy Wallhead, the corporate director for regeneration on the city council said that the proposal was "completely at odds" with current Wakefield development policies.
